North Thanet Labour Party Fundraiser presents: Phil “Swill” Odgers + Bobby Valentino with support from Slick Pixie.
Phil “Swill” Odgers + Bobby Valentino
Phil “Swill” Odgersis well known as one half of the legendary joint vocal strike force of UK folk rebel rockers The Men They Couldn’t Hang. He is also a formidable solo artist in his own right. Audiences around the world from Cairo to Reykjavik, Brisbane to Tokyo and Berlin to London have submitted to his effervescent and heartfelt vocal style in stadium, theatre, hall and after hours lock in!
Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed ‘partial’ autobiography “Tales from the Tracks” and knock-out album “Roll to the Left” and sold out UK tour – Phil “Swill” Odgers rides into Margate town accompanied by the larger than life Bobby Valentino(playing some mean violin). They’re “off the wagon again” playing their first gig of 2019 and the venue is the wonderful Tom Thumb Theatre.
As well as being a founder member and singing with the inimitable The Men They Couldn’t Hang he is a well-loved and prolific solo artist in his own right. He has appeared as a special guest to Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, David Bowie and Van Morrison.
A fine acoustic guitarist, singer and songwriter, his influences are far-reaching, ranging from his Scottish roots, through 50’s/60’s rock ‘n roll, punk, folk and country.
Billy Braggrefers to him as “a natural born troubadour”.
Elvis Costellohas described him as “an undervalued national treasure, his writing style is a combination of Scottish roots, Irish roll and Anglicana”
DJ Liz Kershaw, in her radio show, said that “Swill has a voice like honey and an extraordinary way of writing a song that tells a story we can all relate to but no one’s told before”.
Swill has the ability to tell unique tales with cinematic imagery from kitchen sink realism and social commentary to technicolor splendour.
Swill has recently launched a new pledge campaign which is set to produce another excellent volume of songs (with some surprising guests).
At this special performance at The Tom Thumb, you have the opportunity to hear songs from this album, along with favourites from Swill’s back catalogue and even some classics from The Men They Couldn’t Hang!
To make this gig even more special Phil will be accompanied by renegade virtuoso Bobby Valentinoon fiddle.
Bobby Valentino comes with an outstanding pedigree of his own. He co-wrote and played violin on The Bluebells smash hit “Young at Heart”. Bobby has played on records by Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, The Alabama 3 and Paul Weller to name but a few! He has also contributed to many recordings by The Men They Couldn’t Hang as well as frequently appearing with them on stage.
Bobby’s vocal talents are demonstrated on his solo albums “This is Murder” and “Pat-a-Cake, Pat-a-Cake” both of which will be on sale on the night along with an array of Swill’s vast collection of material.
Phil “Swill” Odgers and Bobby Valentino – a combination not to be missed!
